Like I always say...the lamp never lies.

—Proteus, Adapt

Proteus is a mysterious yellow tank engine with a lamp bolted tightly to his funnel who works on the Alun Railway.

Bio[]

Proteus was built at Falcon Works in 1878. According to Proteus, he was named after a Greek god. After two years of waiting in the workshop, he was finally brought to the Alun Railway in 1880.

In 1905, Proteus befriended Bertram after he was sold to the railway following the death of his controller. Bertram, in turn, rescued Proteus from the damaged Aberfa Bridge.

Proteus tried to encourage Bertram to enter the Alun Mine and later fetched Matthew stop Arwel pushing Bertram off the ballast chute. He tried to convince Bertram not to stoop to Arwel's level but Bertram snapped at him. However, Bertram followed his advice, and, after surviving a rockfall, apologised to Proteus and thanked him for looking out for him since his arrival.

Proteus later helped Bertram in his plan to get Lloyd to safety. He acted as a decoy to the other engines, leading Mighty Mac away. However, Albert Woodham saw through the plan and was not fooled. Proteus then ran into Robyn to whom he tricked into believing Lloyd was heading northwards to the Port. Robyn initially tried to cut him apart with his buzzsaw but fled upon recognising Hywel.

Persona[]

Proteus may come across as slightly bonkers, believing his lamp to be magic! But beneath this mad exterior lies the heart of a kind little engine whose only wish is to have his fantasies realised. His easygoing charm and unquestionable loyalty lead him to become firm friends with Bertram.
